Shots on Goal: Bruins Preseason Goalie Masks

With seven goalies invited to the Boston Bruins training camp this season there was ample opportunity to get a few good shots of some masks.  Manny Fernandez is no longer sharing goaltending duties with Tim Thomas, so competition was wide open for a backup goaltender. Some of this years invitees that I shot were Dany Sabourin, Adam Courchaine, Michael Hutchinson and of course Tim Thomas.

Dany Sabourin

Dany had a good preseason and was in the running for backup goalie with Tuukka Rask but was recently sent to the Bruins AHL affiliate,  Providence Bruins.

As training camp winds down it appears Tuukka Rask will be the backup to Tim Thomas. I was unable to get a good close up of Tuukka’s mask so if any of our readers have a good shot, please feel free to send it in.  We’d love to publish that and any other goalie mask you might have.

Vesa Toskala is the Talk of Toronto and on a Very Short Leash

Vesa Toskala is the Talk of Toronto and on a Very Short Leash

There are so many Leafs’ fans out there you would think Toskala was an All-Star and the talk of the league…

Which also means we are sure to hear more and more about Jonas Gustavsson:

With the final NHL cuts happening now, there continues to be more news about backups than those goalies who already have their roster spots solidified:

Of course this is also the time of predictions, as every writer tries to predict the outcome coming season:

And a few more to round out today’s news:

Luongo wants opportunity to fix playoff mistakes

The Wild goaltender talks about his favorite hockey memory, favorite arenas to play in and more in this week’s interview: Getting To Know: Niklas Backstrom

Tuuka Rask has cemented his position as #2 in Boston with Sabourin sent down. Bruins Almost set

Jonathan Quick will be the Kings’ No. 1 goalie this season, but the coaches and management are still deciding between Jonathan Bernier and Erik Ersberg for the backup job. LA Times and the LA Daily News also looks at the situation in Kings No. 2 goalie in question

Controversy brewing in Toronto:

The totals for the Leafs two goaltenders in the back-to-back games against the Red Wings?

Vesa Toskala: Sixty minutes played, five goals against.

The Monster: Sixty minutes played, zero goals against.

Toskala in no hurry to worry

And then tonight he let in 7 in 24 shots against the Sabres. Coach Ron Wilson announces Toskala will still be #1 on opening night. OK, but you have to think it’ll be a very short run before Wilson announces a “win and you’re in” policy in Toronto.

Clearly Toskala’s poor season last year and the hot start of the prized rookie as left Leafs national and the blogosphere (not to mention the Twitterverse) with lots to say:

A Crease in Time

Sudarshan “Sudsie” Maharaj has served as the goaltending coach of the New York Islanders for six seasons

Sudarshan “Sudsie” Maharaj has served as the goaltending coach of the New York Islanders for six seasons

Over the course of my last six seasons as the Goaltending Consultant/Goaltending Scout with the Islanders, I have spent a great deal of time analyzing the various changes and trends that have marked the evolution of modern day goaltending. However, as with all things that evolve, I have been repeatedly drawn back to the older forms of save execution and invariably to the former goaltenders themselves in my quest to improve my understanding of the position. In fact, I have had the unique opportunity to meet and chat with many former players about their histories and remembrances from their playing days. Although I’ve only had a chance to chat with a small number of former goalies, I have pestered many retired players about the goaltenders that they played both with and against. This has yielded a wealth of funny and interesting tales. It was for this reason that I decided to write this monthly- when the schedule allows- article about some of the goalies of yester year. And so, the concept for “A Crease in Time” was born.

Each month I will interview some past goalies about some of the net minders that influenced them. I’ll briefly touch on some of their goaltending philosophies and idiosyncrasies and retell a few of their stories. But it will be the goalies themselves that will steer the direction of the articles. So I hope you’ll tune in, log on and double click along with these great athletes that blazed the way for the super stars that tending the pipes in today’s NHL.

With this in mind, I recently had the great fortune of having dinner with Gerry McNamara- former goaltender, scout and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. And so we’ll begin by sharing some of that discussion. So check back shortly for the first edition of “A Crease in Time”…….

Sudarshan “Sudsie” Maharaj has served as the goaltending coach of the New York Islanders for six seasons. Sudarshan was also the co-director/instructor of Hockey Canada’s inaugural National Goaltending Development Camp in Calgary in 2006 and 2007. He has also been a member of Hockey Canada’s Goaltending Curriculum Writing Team.

He recently served as a Lead Instructor for the Ontario Hockey League’s Goaltending Development Camp. Sudarshan also served as a part time goaltending scout for both the New York Rangers and Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League.

He also formerly ran Goaltending Scouting Services, which was an organization that evaluated draft eligible goaltenders for National Hockey League clubs.
