Semyon Varlamov goes old school with World Cup mask

Team Russia will see polarizing netminder Semyon Varlamov serve as one of the team’s three goaltenders at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey – and he’s got a new mask to bring with him to Toronto: With a mask designed by Swedish mask artist Dave Gunnarsson, Varlamov goes old school in his honor of Team Russia for the upcoming tournament. Per Gunnarsson’s Facebook page: “Semyon Varlamov’s Team Russia mask for the World Cup 2016 is created in a total retro style with a matte finish????. It is just like a time machine… We went back in time and created...

John Gibson brings Pac-Man to World Cup with mask design

“John Gibson is getting ready with his pixelated World Cup mask… Watch out for the pixel ghosts…??” John Gibson and Swedish mask artist David Gunnarsson have brought classic video game culture to the ice in the past with their collaborative mask designs – and once again, they’re going old-school with Gibson’s design for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey: Like a number of netminders so far – including Henrik Lundqvist, whose mask Gunnarsson also designed – Gibson included a tribute to his NHL club, the Anaheim Ducks, with a pixellated Mighty Ducks logo on the side of the lid. Henrik Lundqvist honors team and country with World Cup mask

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and Swedish mask artist Dave Gunnarsson certainly aren’t strangers to creating unique mask designs for the King on the international stage. That’s why it’s no surprise the two have done something similar for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey. Pictured above is one of the two options Gunnarsson and Lundqvist have come up with for the upcoming...

We start with the Czech Republic: The Czech Republic certainly doesn’t look like the favored team at the upcoming World Cup. Team Canada, as always, is a bit of a dominant powerhouse. Team USA has an underrated blue line corps with players like John Carlson (although nowhere close to the stacked defensive lineup being offered by Team...

Corey Crawford goes vintage with World Cup mask

Airbrush mask artist Stephane Bergeron of Griff Airbrush is no stranger to taking Corey Crawford’s desires and bringing them to life on his masks; he’s created everything from Crawford’s outdoor masks to his design for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Now, he’s back at it with the Blackhawks goaltender’s design for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, set to begin this September. Here’s our first look: Bergeron told InGoal that Crawford didn’t ask for much – just to keep the design ‘vintage’ in overall appearance, similar to his black mask with the artist. Sure enough, Bergeron delivered in spades, offering up...

Scary close call for

Scary close call for Winnipeg Jets Connor Hellebuyck as teammate’s stick blade got through his cage + cut him near eye; interestingly amid the debate about cat-eye cages, which are banned in Canada, the blade actually appears to go in under the lower bar of the cat-eye opening. Frankly it’s hard to see why that gap, which does nothing to help vision, needs to be big enough for a blade to get through, as unlikely as this incident might be.
