The NHL has set February 4 as the date all goaltenders must be wearing their narrower-legged, proportionally-sized pants. Blues Backup Carter Hutton Takes Turn as Cardinals Catcher

Fans of baseball and hockey didn’t need another reason to love St. Louis Blues backup Carter Hutton after his incredible St. Louis Cardinals tribute mask for the Winter Classic, but he gave them one anyway with an impromptu and entertaining bullpen session over the weekend: Wearing the same bright yellow pads and gloves he wore in the winter classic and another new throwback mask from his longtime artist Jesse Acciacca of Jesse’s Custom Designs (images below), Hutton caught balls from a pitching machine prior to the One Nation Classic, which included a skills competition, at Busch Stadium on Sunday....

Waived: Blue Jackets’ McElhinney, Oilers’ Gustavsson

Monday was a tough day to be a seldom-used backup goaltender in the NHL. The Columbus Blue Jackets placed Curtis McElhinney on waivers and the Edmonton Oilers did the same with Jonas Gustavsson after each had a rough start over the weekend. Each goalie was among the least used in the NHL this season, with Gustavsson getting into seven games behind workhorse Cam Talbot, who leads the League with 37 starts, and McElhinney making seven appearances behind Sergei Bobrovsky, who trails only Talbot and San Jose’s Martin Jones with 34 starts this season.
