Another great mask painted by Daveart.com today–this one for 6’1″ goaltender Philipp Grubauer who hails from Rosenheim, Germany. Grubauer was drafted in the 4th round by the Caps and now plays for the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays – both the Caps and the ‘rays are represented on this hybrid design mask.

From Daveart’s Dave Gunnarsson:

Philipp wanted a really classic and clean design, with strong connections to the teams. One side is dedicated to the Capitals, and the other side to Stingrays with the logo as a swimming stingray with underwater scenes.

It was very fun to create this so called 2 in 1 design, the closer you get to the design the more details and 3-D effects you will discover,and a new design is created in front of your eyes. Some of the details you cannot even see in the photos…

Stephane Bergeron of La Griffe Originale has released another new mask for Chicago’s Corey Crawford. Last season’s mask drew rave reviews and our own Scott Slingsby got some fantastic game shots of it for us.

This newest helmet will be a perfect match as the home version of last season’s mask which has a white base suited for the Hawks’ road unis

Mikka Kiprusoff’s Black Calgary Flames Mask

Last season the Calgary Flames star goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff received a new mask design which was an evolution of the flaming skulls design he has worn throughout his career – this time with a black base – again designed and painted by Kipper’s longtime artist Todd Miska of Miska Designs. Miska sent us studio photos as soon as the mask was complete as well as shots of an old-school Mike Liut style mask he painted for Kipper.

InGoal’s Scott Slingsby captured these images of Kipprusoff’s black game mask recently. Let us know in the comments what you think of it…do you prefer the red mask that established his personal “look?”

Cameron Talbot’s new mask, from Dave Gunnarsson of Daveart.com, is “painted as a classic Rangers mask with the logos, painted as the mask is made of metal.” The twist is that Optimus Prime, from the Transformers series of cartoons and movies, is breaking free of his metal confinement to reveal New York City in the background. “ According to Dave “the metal is bent open all over the mask…showing some robotic powers.”

Dave Gunnarsson of Daveart.com sent along his just-released official photos of the Blue Jacket’s top prospect Mark Dekanich. We were excited to see them today as Dekanich spent a few days with InGoal this summer sharing his training routine with us – stay tuned for more on this!

Dave tells us,

Watch out for Dex again, he is back on a new mask, and now he also has a civil war sword…! It´s so fun to be the Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Mark Dekanich´s painter. It´s always with a big smile I paint his designs with Dex, his nickname and character that always appears on Mark´s masks. Check out all Mark´s Dex masks in the gallery on my website.

This mask is painted for the 3rd jersey, with focus on the cool cannon logo. Then the whole mask goes crazy and is cracked open and out jumps a mad Dex. As you can see, I love to paint a lot of details.

We’ll have more on the mask shortly – but wanted to get the photos up as soon as possible for you….

It seems a berth in the All Star Game has become as much a nuisance as an honour for some NHL players.

Clearly that’s not the case for Brian Elliott, who plans to savour an invite few would have predicted when the season started.

The St. Louis stopper celebrated his nod in the mid-season classic by taking the rare — it may even be a first — step of having an special All Star Game mask created just for the game by Head Strong Grafx. The one-off “memento” mask still features the Casey Jones character from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on one side, while the other features the Blues logo and the famed Gateway Arch.

Elliott, whose future in the NHL was so uncertain last summer he had to settle for a two-way contract from the Blues, won’t have the Moose head and “Mr. Moose” license plate on the backplate this time. Instead Elliott had artist Jason Livery paint a faded All Star Game logo on the backplate, one he plans to get autographed by fellow NHL All Stars as a keepsake.

Mathieu Garon’s new Reebok mask was painted by Artist Sylvie Poitras who also painted Garon’s first mask this season ( check out the link for some great InGoal game photography by Scott Slingsby), as well as New Jersey Devil’s legend Martin Brodeur’s.

A strong design that will be visible from afar, it also follows a recent trend of incorporating subtle details and textures for this lucky enough to get a close look at the helmet.

Mask artist Dave Gunnarsson about Beskorowany’s mask:

“When Tyler told me what he wanted on his new mask I was totally thrilled. He wanted a tribute design for his two musician heroes, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. I couldn´t wait to get started…. It was so incredible fun to paint this design. One side is dedicated to Cash, and the other side to Nelson. I wanted it to be a worthy and clean design, in the same style as the awesome music of the artists.”

Each side features iconic images of the two legendary musicians and the black and white color scheme adds a retro feel to the mask.

The mask is divided by a surprising burst of color down the middle of the mask: a green falling star speeding through the night sky, something that Tyler wanted as part of his design.

Dave continues talking about creating the mask by saying, “I love to change style in paint, depending on the theme and what feeling I want to bring into the design. Just as usual the design is packed with extreme detail work to be discovered all over the design, many of them created with metallic and only visible when seen live.”

Jose Theodore’s Florida Panthers “Tiki Gargoyle” Mask

Mask artist Dave Gunnarsson has just released the first official photos of Jose Theodore’s “Tiki Gargoyle” mask. The Gargoyle was a personal trademark on Theodore’s helmets, going back to his days in Montreal. With most goaltenders, when they have a personal trademark design it just gets recoloured or repurposed in a new team’s colours. This is a brilliant evolution which recognizes his past but absolutely transforms it for his new home in Florida.

This mask reminds us of one F-X Allaire created for Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo as a nod to British Columbia’s First Nations culture. That helmet was worn in practice but never in a game.

In Gunnarsson’s words:

On this mask it is time for Gargoyles again, I love to paint gargoyles. Jose wanted it in a new unique way with a cool connection to Florida. Karl in my team came up with the idea of Tiki, I made some sketches were I mixed Tikis and Gargoyles, and the design idea was born. Jose loved the sketches and I started the adventure to paint it.

The Burning TikiGargoyles are sitting on each side of the Florida beach in their sand castles, guarding the net. Around this I created a totally action packed Florida design with so many Florida details to discover all over the mask. I love to spend a lot of time just painting details and go crazy on details, and play with metallic effects. Lots of the stuff you can only see when you see the mask live. I remember when I was a kid and watched the TV series Miami Vice, in the intro there were flamingos, so I really wanted that in the design…

On the chin the mask is transformed into a Tiki Gargoyle mask, turning Jose into one when he put it on his head.

Mike McKenna’s Ottawa Senators Mask

Mask artist Dave Gunnarsson has just released photos of occasional InGoal columnist Mike McKenna’s Ottawa Senators helmet. If you haven’t seen Mike’s work here, you should. It’s some of the most popular we have produced – especially his guide to a professional goaltender’s gear and customization.

As always Dave offers some comments on the design:

Mike is a big time racing fan, and on his masks he always wants racing inspired graphics with cool action lines, mixed with the team logos. It is so exciting to create.

Just as usual we have added lots and lots of details and metallic effects and 3-D details. When you come closer and closer to the mask a new dimension of details opens up, and a new design is created in front of your eyes. Some stuff you can only see when you see the mask live. On one side I have painted the Canadian Parliament.
