Shots on Goal: Goalie Mask Photos-Scott Munroe, Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Earlier in the season while shooting the Sound Tigers-Devils game, Scott Munroe had a mask that closely resembled that of New York Islanders goalie Marty Biron.

As can be seen in tonight’s shots, Munroe also has a mask that bears a striking resemblance to that of Dwayne Rolson’s.

Munroe signed with the NY Islanders in the summer of 2009. He spent the previous four season in the Philadelphia Flyers system with the Philadelphia Phantoms. Scott was the winning goaltender in the longest AHL game ever played. It was Game 5 of the East Division Semifinals where the Philadelphia Phantoms faced the Albany River Rats. The game lasted 142:58 and ended in the fifth overtime where the Phantoms won 3-2. Munroe had 65 stops in the victory.

Shots on Goal: Goalie Mask Photos-Springfield Falcons/Edmonton Oilers Devan Dubnyk

For the second week in a row I’ve got a mask from Ray Bishop. Please visit Ray’s website Bishop Designs to view more of his great work.

I shot these photos of Devan Dubnyk while he was with the Springfield Falcons earlier this season. Shortly after this game Dubnyk was called up to the Edmonton Oilers where he currently shares the Oilers net with Jeff Deslauriers after starting goaltender Nikolai Khabibulinn underwent season ending surgery.

Nathan Lawson picked up his 13th win of the season with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Manchester Monarchs.

With the victory, the Sound Tigers are now (30-27-3-6) and are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 69 points. Manchester (34-22-3-5) gained a point and remains in third place in the Atlantic Division with 76 points

Nathan Lawson

Lawson, who earned the game’s second star, stopped 26 Manchester shots for his 13th win of the year (13-12-3). Lawson got help from defenseman Jake Gannon, who scored for the second time this season with what seemed like a routine shot on goal that beat Bernier to the far side. Jon Gleed scored his first goal when he deflected the puck into the net off a shot from left wing Trevor Smith.

Shots on Goal: Goalie Mask Photos-John Curry and Brad Thiessen, Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

During the recent game between the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and Lowell Devils I had a chance to get some detailed shots of the Penguins’ goalie masks.

John Curry

John Curry’s mask was created by Ray Bishop. You can view more of Ray’s work at Bishop Custom Designs.

Curry (20-16-0) is currently in his third season with the Penguins and has been called up to the parent club, Pittsburgh Penguins, twice this year due to injuries to Marc-Andre Fleury.  Prior to turning pro, Curry spent his college career at Boston University where he was ranked fourth in the nation with a 2.01 goals against average, sixth with a .928 save percentage, ninth with 2,154 minutes played, and first with seven shutouts.

Brad Thiessen

I’m not sure who did the artwork on Thiessen’s mask, so if any of our readers know who the artist is, please drop us a line in the comment section at the end of the post.

Thiessen (6-9-1) is in his first season with WBS Penguins. He came to the Penguins after his Junior year at Northeastern University where he had a 25-12-4 record, 2.11 GAA, 3 shutouts, and a .931 save percentage. He was the 2008–09 Hockey East Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

I had the opportunity last season to shoot one of Thiessen’s games when he was still with the Northeastern Huskies. If you’re interested in viewing  the pictures just click on the Northeastern vs Merrimack link.

Devils Goalie Mike McKenna

Mike McKenna had a great game in net but unfortunately came up on the short end of the 1-0 game. McKenna turned away 20 of 21 shots on the night with the only blemish being a Luca Caputi snapshot that found the back of the net at the 5:49 mark of the third period. With the loss, McKenna’s record drops to  17-11-3.

Boston College’s John Muse vs Boston University’s Kieren Milan

In their 250th meeting, The BC Eagles and John Muse picked their 15th overall Beanpot trophy with an exciting 4-3 win over cross town rival Boston University.

Muse earned both the Eberly Trophy (highest save percentage) and Beanpot MVP honors, stopping 64-of-67 shots (.955) in the two-game tournament to become the first BC goalie since Greg Taylor in 1994 to capture both honors.

Muse picked up his 11th win of season (11-6-2) by stopping 31 shots, including 13 alone in the third period. The win was Muse’s 54th of his career, surpassing Taylor and goalie coach Jim Logue for sole possession of fifth place on the school’s win list.

Shots on Goal: Goalie Photos-Vancouver Canucks Roberto Loungo vs Boston Bruins Tuukka Rask

The Boston Bruins hosted the Vancouver Canucks the past Saturday in hopes of breaking their nine game losing streak but ran into a hot Roberto Loungo who stopped 41 of 43 shots enroute to a 3-2 shootout win.

Tuukka Rask

Tuukka Rask was trying to stop his own losing streak (0-4-2) dating back to Dec. 30. Rask was given an early 2-0 lead but was unable to hold off the resilient Canucks. Vancouver goals were scored by Mason Raymond (21) in the second period and Pavol Demitra (1) in the third.  Demitra also scored the only goal of the shootout.

Rask (10-7-2) stopped 29 of 31 shots.

Luongo and the Canucks,  in the midst of the longest road trip in NHL history,  made their only stop in Boston this season count. Boston started the scoring early with two first period power play goals by Zdeno Chara (5) and Michael Ryder (13) but couldn’t find the back of the net the rest of the game. Luongo stopped 41 shots including 3 in the shootout.

This was Luongo’s 30th win (30-15-2), his fifth consecutive 30 win season.

Shots on Goal: Goalie Photos-The Beanpot

What is the Beanpot? To most people, a beanpot is a deep, wide-bellied, short-necked vessel used to cook beans. To those of us in the Boston area, it’s a winter hockey tradition that takes place on the first and second Monday in February at the TD Garden, home of the Bruins.

The tournament consists of four local schools, Harvard, Northeastern, Boston College and Boston University. All are within a few square miles of each other.  It lasts two rounds, with first-round opponents being rotated from year to year. The second round consists of a consolation game to start the night followed by the championship game.

In addition to the trophy, the winner is also awarded city bragging rights for a year.

Harvard’s Kyle Richter vs Boston College’s John Muse

Boston College took the first game of the night 6-0, behind a 33 save effort from junior goaltender John Muse.  The win for Muse was his 52nd as an Eagle and improved his record to 9-6-2 on the season.  Muse played 57:26 and was lifted for Chris Venti for the final 2:24.

Harvard goalie Kyle Richter made 33 saves in 54:02, while replacement John Riley made four saves in the closing 5:58.

The Crimson was penalized 17 times for 58 minutes. They also had three game misconducts in the third period.

Northeastern’s Chris Rawlings vs Boston University’s Kieren Milan

In the nightcap, BU’s Kieren Milan stopped 26 shots to pick up the win as BU bested Northeastern 2-1. Milan improved his record to 8-10-0, thus setting up the 250th  meeting between BU and BC for the championship game.

Freshman Chris Rawlings (10-10-1), turned away 33 shots in his first ever Beanpot action.

Northeastern will play Harvard in the consolation game.
