How Hard is it to Play Goal – Video Segment with Martin Brodeur

In a fun pre-Olympic piece, Wall Street Journal Reporter Reed Albergotti did this video segment on “How Hard Can it Be” to play goal, with Team Canada goalie Martin Brodeur. Marty was a real natural in the piece that didn’t come off as cheezy as many bits for non-fans can.

As you watch it – can you spot the equipment error before they point it out?

Calgary Flames Mikka Kiprusoff Pre-Game Skate

On Saturday the Calgary Flames graciously allowed us access to the pre-game skate before their game against the Edmonton Oilers. In the evening Kipper was solid in goal as the Flames hammered the Oilers 6-1. Little did we know it would be Phaneuf’s last game as a Flame.

Video of Practice Session

We shot a bit of test video for another project that you may enjoy seeing. What I found most remarkable was how little dialog – they were obviously working through a well-rehearsed routine.

Top 10 Shootout Goals

TSN ran their top 10 creative shootout goals recently. While I’m not sure as goalies we want to celebrate our fellow ‘tenders leaving their jockstraps behind as they get mesmerized by a player in the shootout – you have to admit that some of these are pretty impressive. Consider it scouting, or shootout research to check out what the most creative players have to do to beat the best goalies in the world.

I think if this happened to me, once the game was over and the crying was done, I’d be able to shake a few guys’ hands for their creativity (Datsuk, for example), a few guys would just frustrate me (“they scored skating in backwards? how did I let that in”) and one or two guys I’d just want to run through the boards (Ribeiro – I’d have shaken his hand until he went and did that shhhhhh to the crowd, the guy with the lacrosse move – cool, but then to just stand in my face and wave it around? Hammer time).

Saves of the Week

Another great round up of the best goalies making the best save. I love Carey Price’s cross-crease dive, and Quick was quick with the leather as he slid across his crease but for my money the poke check by Brodeur was a thing of beauty – skillful and artful at the same time.

Check them out – amazing goaltending with an extra helping of glove saves this week. Kipper tops the list as we expected but there are lots more to enjoy.
