Prince George Cougars goaltender Brett Zarowny was named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week after winning two of three starts, including a shutout, a goals-against average of 1.00, and a save percentage of .968.
Zarowny stopped 91 shots in three games, beating the Vancouver Giants twice, including earning his second career shutout and Second Star honours in the first game. He followed that up the next day with 35 saves and a First Star nod in a 2-1 win. The 17-year-old rookie from Edson, Alberta was also named First Star in tough 33-save, 2-0 loss to Swift Current earlier in the week.
Zarowny, 8-7-0-0 this season, is third among WHL rookies with a 2.97 goals-against and second with a .910 save percentage. He was Prince George’s first pick in the third round of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft – the highest drafted goaltender ever by the Cougars.
Also considered for the award was Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospect Matt Murray, who won all three starts with a goals-against average of 1.65 and save percentage of .938 for Sault Ste. Marie, and Los Angeles Kings’ prospect Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, who was 1-1-0-1 with a 1.63 goals against and .940 save percentage.
