Mike Vaughn Ask a Pro Video Interview

Mike Vaughn Ask a Pro Video Interview

Mike Vaughn President of Vaughn Hockey - Custom Goaltending Equipment MakersInGoal just returned from visiting Vaughn Hockey in Ontario and Michigan. While there we had the opportunity to tour both factories and spend several hours, including a fascinating conversation over dinner, with company founder Mike Vaughn.

The factories were beyond impressive, and the logistics behind assembling hundreds of different pieces, most subject to varying degrees of customization, are incredibly complex. While most factories typically turn out widget after widget, each identical, in many ways no two pads coming off the Vaughn line are the same – and each pad is made up of more than 75 individual pieces.

Keeping everything flowing smoothly and efficiently takes a level of organization beyond anything we imagined. And getting insight into the process – the materials, testing, and details of construction – while getting to ask any question that came to mind of the man behind every design, will also help InGoal bring you some of our most in-depth reviews in the coming months.

Coming Soon – InGoal reviews the Vaughn V5 7800 pads and gloves

Mike has been making goal equipment since the early 80s and has insights into just about every facet of the game. It was a fascinating visit on all levels. In fact, Mike shared some of the upcoming developments from Vaughn and while we are sworn to secrecy, we can say this: it is shaping up to be a big year.

We’re certain every goalie would love the chance to chat with Mike, but since we couldn’t take you all with us, we took some of questions from InGoal readers instead, and Mike answered them in our first video Ask A Pro interview.

Kevin Woodley sat down with Mike and asked him about being an independent goalie equipment maker, getting started in the business, helmets, gloves, customization and more. Enjoy the video and watch for lots more from Vaughn and InGoal, including a review of the new V5 7800 in our upcoming edition of the Digital Magazine due out next week.

David is one of the founders of InGoal Magazine which he began in 2009. Of course he finds time for some goaltending of his own as well, and despite his age, clings desperately to the idea that some NHL team will call him to play for them - though in his mid-forties (OK, late 40s) it'll likely be for a practice when everyone else on their depth chart has the flu and the shooter tutor has gone in for repairs.

Good piece. Shame it cut off just as it was getting _really_ interesting with the topic of mask protection, comfort and regulations.

I know! It seemed like was gonna say something almost controversial, then backed off and didn’t really say much

Good to see Mike. He made an arm and chest protector for me in the early 80’s I believe. He was at the time a young guy working out of a shop behind his home in Pontiac Michigan. I remember him showing me a catch glove that he was working on at the time that turned out to be an early T-1030 . What a great success story.
