Mike Vaughn Ask a Pro Video Interview
InGoal just returned from visiting Vaughn Hockey in Ontario and Michigan. While there we had the opportunity to tour both factories and spend several hours, including a fascinating conversation over dinner, with company founder Mike Vaughn.
The factories were beyond impressive, and the logistics behind assembling hundreds of different pieces, most subject to varying degrees of customization, are incredibly complex. While most factories typically turn out widget after widget, each identical, in many ways no two pads coming off the Vaughn line are the same – and each pad is made up of more than 75 individual pieces.
Keeping everything flowing smoothly and efficiently takes a level of organization beyond anything we imagined. And getting insight into the process – the materials, testing, and details of construction – while getting to ask any question that came to mind of the man behind every design, will also help InGoal bring you some of our most in-depth reviews in the coming months.
Mike has been making goal equipment since the early 80s and has insights into just about every facet of the game. It was a fascinating visit on all levels. In fact, Mike shared some of the upcoming developments from Vaughn and while we are sworn to secrecy, we can say this: it is shaping up to be a big year.
We’re certain every goalie would love the chance to chat with Mike, but since we couldn’t take you all with us, we took some of questions from InGoal readers instead, and Mike answered them in our first video Ask A Pro interview.
Kevin Woodley sat down with Mike and asked him about being an independent goalie equipment maker, getting started in the business, helmets, gloves, customization and more. Enjoy the video and watch for lots more from Vaughn and InGoal, including a review of the new V5 7800 in our upcoming edition of the Digital Magazine due out next week.
