Patrick Roy: Winning. Nothing Else. Interview
Today I spoke with Michel Roy who wrote the biography of his son: Patrick Roy Winning. Nothing Else. I’ve been enjoying the book and the unique insights that only a father can bring. If you’re a fan, or just interested in an inspiring story of one of the all-time greats then you’ll enjoy the book.
Some highlights of our chat:
Growing up as a member of so many losing teams - how seeing him with the AHLs Calder Cup was the most emotional time for his parents – even more than the first Stanley Cup.
Leaving Montreal was devastating to Patrick and ”people don’t realize how important it was” for Patrick to have his number retired by the Canadiens and become part of the Montreal Canadiens family again.
Patrick’s Legacy as a goaltender – the butterfly of course and a growing umber of Quebec players becoming goaltenders.
How Patrick will feel about Brodeur eclipsing his wins record.
How long Patrick will continue to coach in junior before being ready to take on a NHL team.

Patrick is an inspiration to all goalies in my estimation. He had the courage to be true to himself, as well.
Great interview! Some interesting insight that you wouldn’t get from Patrick himself. Well done!
I am pretty sure I would not have thought I would hear “Ultimate Warrior” references in an interview regarding one of the greatest goalies ever (even though it pains me to admit that).
I am pretty sure my dad has no idea who the Ultimate Warrior is.
But great interview David!
One of the winningest goalies ever, some hate him, some love him, but you cant disagree with his cups, and his records!
Definitely one of the greatest and personally my favorite. Will definitely get the book!
Roy will always be #1 in my books!
As a long-time Bruins fan, I watched my teams suffer at the hands of St. Patrick many a season. However, I was always able to put my disappointment for my teams losses aside at least enough to recognize the greatness I was observing.
Patrick Roy was easily one of the best goaltenders to ever play the game and, unlike many of the all-time greats (Plante, Sawchuk, Hall, etc…) I was able to watch his entire career.
Hats off to Patrick. A true winner.

Patrick Roy was always a favourite of mine and one my my idolized goalies when I was younger. It will be interesting to read about his life and to see a side of him that you didn’t see when watching him play. It is always interesting to see how much more there is to a person, that they are so much more than what you thought.
Patrick Roy, my all time favourite goalie. Gonna have to pick this one up for sure!
How will we know if we won or not?
Patrick Roy
Always fun to watch at playoff time.
He was the true contender and could win any game.
