U.S. Goaltender Jessie Vetter – World Champion
Goalie with a record that would humble the greats chats with inGoal Magazine
Jessie Vetter is the goaltender for the Women’s World Champions from the United States. That’s impressive enough but Jessie’s hockey resume goes much further and she is certainly one of the most accomplished goaltenders in the the world.
Consider these:
- Three state high school soccer championships at Monona Grove High School.
- As a sophmore at the University of Wisconsin she had a GAA of 0.83, including a shutout streak of over 448 minutes – do the math – that’s the equivalent of over seven games!
- NCAA player of the year including a record 14 shutouts this year.
- NCAA Frozen Four Championship in 3 of 4 years at Wisconsin.
- Oh yes, and throw in a Nations Cup and back to back World Championships.
In our brief chat Jessie discusses her background with a great deal of modesty, adds in a bit of advice for youngsters wanting to play goal, and shares her thoughts about the World Championships and the ongoing rivalry with the Canadian Women.
Jessie and the rest of the top American players will be training hard this summer and get together in August for the Olympic selection camp. Jessie wasn’t assuming anything about making the team, but it’s a safe bet the coaches already have her penciled in for the start in the Gold Medal game at Canada Hockey Place at 3:30 on February 25, 2010 in Vancouver.
Ahead of that there will be a lot of hard training, the Hockey Canada Cup in Vancouver this fall, the Four Nations Cup in Finland and the Quest Tour – 10 games throughout the U.S. between September and February, including three against the Canadians.
Thank you to USA Hockey for connecting us with Jessie and to Qwest Communications for their support of USA Hockey and the U.S. Women’s National Team. Photo courtesy of USA Hockey/Nancie Battaglia, All rights reserved.

Enjoyed with interview with Jessica Vetter!
In my next life I would like to be half as good as Jessie. She is a remarkable young woman.
[...] There were hits and penalties and shots aplenty! Unfortunately for Canada the US goalie, Jessie Vetter, was on fire and made some really great stops. Of course Kim St-Pierre, Canada’s goalie, [...]
Amazing record and great article. I’m hoping to see more of these so my daughter will be able to see a future with women’s hockey.
Wow, I think I can speak for us all and say we wish we could have a shutout streak like Jesse has had!
