In his first full season as Boston’s undisputed No.1 goaltender, Tuukka Rask is paying homage to past Bruins greats on his new mask.
Painted by popular Swedish artist David Gunnarsson of DaveArt, Rask’s new lid features a raging bear in the middle of the forehead, with Gerry Cheevers in his famous “stitches” mask on the left side.
“With this mask on Tuukka Rask will be transformed into a badass bear,” Gunnarsson wrote on his Facebook page, adding he used a wide range of “Special FX,” including Holographix FX, 3-D PaintTech, and GhostSmoke. “And as always when you come closer you will discover more and more details, and when you come really close you will discover tributes to legendary Bruins players.”
We already identified the Cheevers image. But there is also an unidentified skater on the left edge and the smiling face of another player along the back right edge. We have a pretty good idea who the latter is, but want to hear from you. If you recognize one or both of the images on Rask’s mask, let us know in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
After you’ve checked out all the details of Rask’s new mask below – and made your guesses in comments – you can find more of Gunnarsson’s great artwork on both his website and on his Twitter feed. And for all the new masks you can expect to see when the NHL season starts on Jan. 19, be sure to visit out InGoal’s mask page.
