Hidden Designs Pop Out On Vasilevskiy’s New Lightning Mask
The Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy will go into his first season as an unchallenged NHL starter with a new mask by Sylvie Marsolais of Sylabrush. The mask’s overall design is similar to his mask from last season, but Vasilevskiy and Marsolais have added a few new details for the new season, including some that only appear in cold temperatures, popping out when he’s playing.
On the crown a roaring lion is discharging bolts of lightning that trail around the entire mask, while the palm trees on the sides symbolize the city of Tampa and Russian eagles represent Vasilevskiy’s home country. Vasilevskiy’s number, 88, is painted across the chin, surrounded by Tampa Bay Lightning “Bolt” logos. The chrome accents stand out even more in contrast to the matte finish of the rest of the mask.
The Lightning are celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary this season, and a number of the anniversary logos have been added to Vasilevskiy’s mask.
Some of them are painted with a special SubZero paint that becomes darker in cold temperatures, as have a few of the Russian symbols along the side of the mask. Marsolais has posted a video of the effect on her Instagram page.
