Minnesota’s Josh Harding is one of the most involved goaltenders in the NHL in terms of the design of his masks and often uses them for tributes, from promoting Breast Cancer awareness during his sister’s battle with the disease, to his favourite rock bands, and even a tip of the hat to old friends with a mural of them all playing shinny on outdoor rinks.

Last season’s mask even paid tribute to all the masks used in the Wild’s first 10 seasons.

Todd Miska of Miska Designs his always been his artist – they developed a close working relationship as Miska brought Harding’s concepts to life. This year Harding asked for a special tribute to his grandmother boldly across the right side of his mask, while the backplate, reserved for personal tributes by many goalies, includes the names of recently passed friends and former teammates – Rick Rypien, Derek Boogaard and Pavol Demitra.

10 Responses to Harding’s Mask a Tribute to Departed Grandmother, Teammates

  1. Nick H. says:

This is a prime example of a simple design conveying so much. Aside from the classy tributes, I really like the rose art (with the tribal mix) and the ‘wild’ font Miska came up with for Harding’s name on the chin. Very cool!

  2. Danny says:

Miska is always gold. Another clean, good looking mask. I think Harding could break out this year. It’s not easy to showcase your game playing behind a stud like Backstrom, but Josh Harding is a very good goalie and could start in the NHL.

  3. paul szabo says:

I agree that in this case, less is more. I don’t like how in some sports like motocross or F1, the helmets are so busy that you can’t tell one guy from another. Bold is gold!

  4. David says:

This is probably one of the best mask designs I’ve ever seen. With the statements made on the mask, it almost takes away from it to have the team logo on the mask.

  5. Dan Anderson says:

Great design and great idea with the tributes

  6. Bonnie Jurgens says:

What a great tribute to your Grandmother Josh – we are so proud of your accomplishments and know Rose will be with you in your travels. Aunt Bonnie

  7. Paul Ipolito says:

This touches my heart. My son’s backplate has both of his deceased grandmother’s initials and the phrase “This save is for you” on it.

  8. Great job on all counts. Touching and well-designed, the font with ‘HARDS’ is poison though. Actually.. if that font was used for Minnesota as well it wouldn’t look so bad. DONT MIX DIFFERENT FONTS! And if you have to, know what you’re doing.

  9. Joseph says:

Harding always has great masks and great tributes on his masks! Hope he has a huge season after devastating injuries he’s had!

  10. Scott says:

Wow. Another stellar mask from Josh and Miska Designs. It looks great up close, but the beauty is that the mask also looks amazing from a distance. The tributes are spectacular. Nice job guys, it’s easily my favorite mask design in the NHL.
