Ondrej Pavelec goes clean and classic for WC outdoor mask

This year’s Winter Classic promises to be cold and cloudy, with a forecast only projected to top out at 14 degrees F (-10 C).

While Ondrej Pavelec isn’t expected to get much ice time, though – we likely won’t see his mask for anything but warm-ups – he’s bringing arguably one of the best lids we’ve seen this year with him to the outdoor game, where it will join him on the bench in case Henrik Lundqvist needs some help.

Pavelec’s first mask with the Rangers was crisp, clean, and retro, with classic New York City street signs used as inspiration for the design on a bright red backdrop.

For the Winter Classic, he’s staying with the clean look – but while his regular season lid is a tribute to his new city, this one is classic Rangers all the way. Take a look:

The mask is another masterpiece by Swedish mask artist Dave Gunnarsson of DaveArt, who has been Pavelec’s mask artist for years now.

“A total retro design all built on the awesome New York Rangers’ Winter Classic logos,” Gunnarsson explained, via Instagram. “It is clean, it is retro, it is 2-D…”

An inverse of Pavelec’s regular season mask, this one has the Rangers logo in red on a navy backdrop – with the team’s name sweater design spelled out on top and their patch logo flanking either side of the cage.

There are some extra designs hidden in the mask, as Gunnarsson opted to use his Holosphere FX holographic paint to create miniature Rangers logos throughout the backdrop – but beyond the small red CCM logo above the cage and the Winter Classic logo on the chin, the rest of the design is kept simple and clean.

The Rangers Winter Classic jersey was met with mixed reviews when it first came out, but it’s impossible to argue that the darker color scheme isn’t infinitely superior to anything the team uses now – and as a mask design, it’s absolutely perfect.

New York will face off against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, skating out at Citi Field at 1:00 PM EST.
