Dallas Stars Goalie Marty Turco One of the Best Puck Handlers in Hockey

Let’s face it, there probably isn’t a goalie on the planet who doesn’t admire the amazing ability of Marty Turco or Marty Brodeur to fire the puck. They might make a few mistakes, but who wouldn’t like to be able to make those mistakes.

Now, how much do you practice that shot? There are few coaches who make it possible in practice. Only a very few times in games do you touch the puck.

You want to be that good? It’s up to you to take responsibility for it.

Think Sidney Crosby’s famous washing machine. Think the dented up door on a budding centerman’s garage. If your garage is dented only because your buddies miss the net taking shots on you, how good can you expect to be?

So, here they are. InGoalMag presents:

10 ways to have a world class shot as a goalie

  1. Take every chance in practice to pass the puck – with accuracy.
  2. Start shooting at home.
  3. Wear your goalie gloves – always.
  4. Think about wearing your skates – it changes things.
  5. Can’t make a backyard rink in the winter? How about a few square feet of ice to shoot from?
  6. Get a piece of plastic to shoot off in the good weather.
  7. Commit to regular practice. Every, single, day. See what can 5 minutes a day do for my goaltending.
  8. Beer leaguers – try big passes every game – nobody remembers the score the next day.
  9. If you’re a kid, or you have a husband or wife who likes their garage door the way it was made – find something solid to shoot against.
  10. And change your name to Marty. 2 out of 3 goalies named Marty in the NHL have great shots. Statistics don’t lie, do they?
