Penguins’ Fleury standing tall in crease – Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Playing very good has not made Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury good enough in the eyes of many people outside his club.  ”He’s been labeled as a talent, but for some reason not many people mention that over the last two years he’s become one of the best goalies in the game,” Penguins backup goaltender Mathieu Garon said. “I wasn’t here last year, but I know that guys around the league think that was his coming of age as an elite goalie.”

Gustavsson having a ‘Monster’ playoff in Sweden

It’s often said in hockey that goaltenders blossom later than forwards or defensemen. That can be especially true for bigger goalies.
Take 24-year-old Jonas Gustavsson of Färjestads BK Karlstad as a prime example of that phenomenon.
Gustavsson, almost 6-foot-4, did not reach the Elitserien (Swedish Elite League) level until last season and did not truly emerge as an impact player until this year. Now he’s the talk of Swedish hockey and has NHL scouts taking notice.

Lou making a case for Vezina nod

Yes, it’s something to see. Luongo is on a 19-4-1 run and now has a 30-11-6 record overall. It’s enough to make him a late, and unlikely, candidate for the Vezina.
Luongo has better stats than Evgeni Nabokov, Miikka Kiprusoff and Henrik Lundqvist. Many will point out Steve Mason and claim he’s a lock, but his numbers are almost identical to what Pascal Leclaire put up last year, backstopping the same team.
Luongo definitely made a strong case Tuesday he deserves some consideration for a Vezina.

Beware of Blue Jackets

Teams in the Western Conference had better watch out for the new guys. Eric McErlain says Steve Mason and the Columbus Blue Jackets will be tough.

One Response to Goalie News Thursday April 2, 2009

  1. Fleury is without a doubt the #3 goalie in the Eastern Conference, after Brodeur and Lundquist. I personally think that Lundquist is starting to believe his own legend and seems to be falling off a little bit – but as they say, we’ll see once the playoffs start, who’s the hottest.
