Goalie Ondrej Pavelec Makes a Save without a Mask

Talk about old school! Ondrej Pavelec’s save a perfect celebration of the 50th anniversary of Plante donning the mask

As part of a remarkable 5o save performance Atlanta’s Ondrej Pavelec made this impressive maskless save. The commentors correctly point out that the officials are supposed to blow the whistle when the goalie’s mask comes off. (Interestingly it wasn’t long ago we passed on a report that there is actually nothing in the NHL rule book saying a goalie has to wear a mask).

Here’s to Ondrej – enjoy the save. How many of you would hang in there and try to make this save?

Oh yes, and the Thrashers won on the strength of Pavelec’s performance. 51 shots and only one goal – and it took a 5 on 3 power play to do it.

What a stud. I’d be trying to make that save with my glove and blocker in front of my face.

Do you think the refs felt like a$$es for not blowing the whistle right away after seeing he didn’t have his mask on?
