The Hockey Hall of Fame will change induction rules beginning in 2010. The new rules will allow for women to be judged separately from men instead of competing against them for a coveted place in hockey history. This means the possibility of up to two female hockey players inducted each year with four spots being reserved each year for their male counterparts. Currently there are only four spots available each year for both male and female players.

Which Goalies Should Go in First?

With the rule change and female goaltender Kira Hurley being honoured in the Hockey Hall of Fame, the way is paved for the official induction of other talented goaltenders who will be recognized for their abilities and not necessarily for their accomplishments while playing in men’s hockey leagues.

Some notable female goaltenders in recent, and not so recent, history include:

Elizabeth Graham

Manon Rheaume

Charline Labonte

Kim St. Pierre

Jessie Vetter

What do you think of this list? Who is missing? Who would be your first candidate?

  1. Kris says:

not a goalie (shame on me) but I would think Cammie Granato should/would be a shoe in for her contributions to USA woman’s hockey

  2. Carolyn O'Leary says:

Oh, no doubt. There are numerous talented women hockey players who deserve to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years.

  3. Lauren Lynn says:

I agree with you Carolyn, but I also believe Manon Rheaume should probably be the first to be in. She broke through such a barrier just getting to the NHL, plus she had such a great career in the Olympics.
