‘Tenders Tips #2

Goalie's food journal

Maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet is essential if you are going to be the best goalie that you can be. You probably know that already. You probably have a decent idea of what goes into a healthy diet. It’s not rocket science folks – reaching for a bag of chips – try a banana instead. Thirsty? Skip the coke and try plain old (free) water. No, this isn’t a tip on what you should eat and how to put a proper diet together.

It’s a simple exercise – for three days keep a journal of everything that you eat.

Nutritionists might have you do a similar exercise to assess the nutrients you are getting, the calories taken in and so on. That’s all good, but this is a quick tip and I’m not suggesting anything so in-depth. This is a simple exercise in reflection – looking at yourself and your habits and pausing to think about how you are doing.

Knowing that you are writing it down, I am sure that you will think twice about what you eat. You know what’s healthy and this simple exercise might nudge you down the road to healthier eating. It only takes a few days to break a cycle of poor eating and to begin feeling better.

Daily, or at the end of the three days, sit down and review the journal. What could you have done better? Circle or highlight the choices that you could have made better – the chocolate bar where you could have chosen an apple, the pop when there was milk available. You get the picture. How about putting a star beside some good choices?

Remember – it’s all about being the best that you can be so you get the most out of your game. Is your diet helping or holding you back?

Begin to think about your habits and you’ll be taking a step in the right direction.
