Quick Sets Record For Shutouts by an American-born Goaltender

Los Angeles Kings’ number one Jonathan Quick has set a new record for shut outs by an American-born goaltender, after stopping all 32 shots faced during a 5-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

It was Quick’s 41st NHL career shut out, passing John Vanbiesbrouck and Frank Brimsek, who both recorded 40 shutouts during their respective careers. He is also currently tied with New York Rangers’ legend Mike Richter for the most playoff shutouts by an American goalie, with nine.

Drafted in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Kings, Quick holds an NHL career record of 247-156-50 to date, with a .916 save percentage and 2.26 goals-against average. He back stopped the Kings to Stanley Cup success in 2011 and 2013, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy during their 2011 run. He also won the William M. Jennings Trophy for holding the lowest goals-against during the 2012/13 season.

A member of the Team USA roster which won silver at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Quick has gone 35-17-4 for the high flying Kings this season, with a .921 save percentage and 2.14 goals-against average while recording four shut outs.

The 30-year old still has another seven years remaining on his current contract, carrying an average cap hit of $5.8 million per season, having signed a ten year mega deal, worth a total of $58 million, in 2013.

He was one of three goaltenders named to Team USA’s preliminary roster for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, along with Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop and New Jersey’s Cory Schneider.
