On Monday, Finnish women’s team goaltender Noora Räty broke some bad news on her twitter account:

Räty, considered one of the top female goaltenders in the world, has had a roller coaster year. Following a stellar performance at the Sochi Olympics, Räty retired from top level play, including national team play, citing the difficulties of training at a high level while holding down a full-time job. Only if she could find a spot on a competitive team that could also pay her would she be able to continue. Kiekko-Vantaa of the Finnish second league offered her a contract, and Räty eventually decided to return to play for the Finnish team again.
Räty’s withdrawal will leave Finland with three goaltenders for this tournament, including two NCAA players, Evelina Suonpaa (Minnesota-Duluth) and Vilma Vaattovaaara (New Hampshire). Meeri Raisanen, who plays in Novogorod, Russia, rounds out the trio.
