Vaughn CHL Goalie of Week: Hawks’ pick Whitney
Chicago Blackhawks prospect Brandon Whitney of the Victoriaville Tigres is the Vaughn Canadian Hockey League today Goaltender of the Week after winning both starts with one shutout, a 0.50 goals-against-average and a .981 save percentage.
Whitney allowed one goal on 52 shots, earning First Star Honours in both games while helping the Tigres earn a pair of victories and climb into first place in the East Division standings. The 19-year-old from Kentville, Nova Scotia opened the week with 20 saves a 2-1 win over the Gatineau Olympiques, then picked up his first shutout of the season the next night with 31 saves in a 3-0 victory over the Shawinigan Cataractes.
Whitney is playing in his third full season with the Tigres in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. A seventh-round pick of the Blackhawks in the 2012 NHL Draft, Whitney is 6-4 with a goals-against-average of 2.72 and save percentage of .919 this season.
Also considered for the award was Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Oscar Dansk of the Erie Otters after two wins, a shutout, a goals-against-against average of 1.00 and a save percentage of .961, and Alex Moodie, who backstopped the Saskatoon Blades to a perfect 3-0-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 1.67 and save percentage of .949.
