Mackenzie Skapski of the Kootenay Ice is the Vaughn Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Week after winning all three of his games while posting two shutouts, a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .964.
Skapski kicked off his three-win week with a 17-save shutout and third star honours in a 4-0 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Monday, then beat the Brandon Wheat Kings back to back, starting with a 5-3 victory Friday and a 31-save, first-star 4-0 win on Saturday for this third shutout of the season.
The 18-year-old from Abbotsford, BC, is playing in his second full WHL season with the Ice, and has already represented Canada at the under-17 World Championships. Shaw TV up in Kootenay did a nice feature on Skapski late in his rookie season, including the scary bus accident in 2010 that required reconstructive face and emergency brian surgery, nearly costing him a bright future:
Also considered for the award were Jordan Binnington, who set a new franchise record in Owen Sound for career wins with 66 while going 2-1-0-0 with two shutouts and s save percentage of .956. In the QMJHL, Michael Nishi of the Gatineau Olympiques went 2-0-0-0 with a shutout win posting a goals-against-average of 0.50 and save percentage of .984.
