Goalie Masks
With this weekend being the 50th anniversary of Jacques Plante using the first goalie mask, I thought it was time to show a few masks from some of the games I’ve covered so far. Shown below are Matt Dalton of the Providence Bruins, Tyler Scott of the UNH Wildcats, Jeff Zatkoff of the Manchester Monarchs and Cody Reichard of Miami (Ohio)
Happy Halloween!

Who was the very first person to paint the mask with a picture?
I was leaning towards Gerry Cheevers myself but gotta agree with Nick that permanant marker doesn’t count.
Great trivia questions, keep em coming.
Beautiful work!
Thanks Heather
David T – According to Saving Face, the first person to paint their mask was Gary Smith but it was just with color change (from white to yellow to match team colors). Gerry Cheevers was the first with the stitches design, but that wasn’t really paint—it was permanent marker. The first design/picture otherwise I’d say would be Jim Rutherford’s mask in which he had the winged wheel of the Red Wings done over the eyes where the wheels matched up with the eye holes.
I want a Dunkin Donuts patch on my jersey like Matt’s jersey above!
Dalton’s mask isn’t great for the Baby B’s, but it works for Halloween!
