In women’s hockey action this past Wednesday the #4 UNH Wildcats took on the #7 Northeastern Huskies in Durham, New Hampshire. Northeastern, trying to avenge a 5-3 loss at Fenway Park on January 8,  picked up an extra point in a four round shootout when the teams were tied 2-2 after the overtime period.

UNH, which entered the game with a 26-game win streak in the series vs. Northeastern, is now 13-4-5 overall and 7-3-2-0 in Hockey East.

Sophomore goalie Florence Schelling(10-5-3), held UNH scoreless through the first period stopping 8 shots on goal. UNH got on the board first with a power play goal from Kristina Lavoie at 6:05 of the second period. Julie Allen picked up UNH’s second goal of the night, her fourth in the last six games, in the third period tying the game at 2-2.

Schelling stopped 28 shots on the night, including four shots during the shootout.

With the tie, Northeastern remain in first place in Hockey East with an  8-4-3-2 record in the conference and 14-5-3 overall.

Junior goaltender Kayle Herman, starting her ninth game for the Wildcats, held Northeastern scoreless in the first stopping all four shots.

Northeastern scored both of its goals in the second period, the first coming when Casey Pickett grabbed her own rebound and flipped it over Herman’s left shoulder.  Kellie Wallace scored the Huskies second goal at 12:17  when she took a centering pass from Lindsay Berman and put it between the pads for her fourth goal of the season. Rachel Llanes ended the game in the shootout when her shot glanced off the post past Herman and into the net.  

Herman, (7-0-2) turned away 21 shots on the night including 3 in the shootout.
