Three Goalie Stars for November 13, 2010
This week saw plenty of strong goaltending performances with no one person running away with the prestigious InGoal First Star. After considerable deliberations with the selection committee, we are pleased to announce that the winner is….
First Star – Cam Ward, Carolina Hurricanes
Cam Ward took top honours when he went 1-0-1 this past week with a remarkable .970 save percentage. His week was highlighted by a 2-1 shootout win stopping 38 of 39 as he bested St. Louis star Jaro Halak and the Blues.
The 26 year old native of Saskatoon has gone 12-9-3 this season as the Hurricaines sit seven points out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Check out the InGoal Ask-a-Pro interview with Ward and check out how Yoga and Pilates help his game.
Second Star – Anders Lindback, Nashville Predators
Anders Lindback earlier this season was the subject of an InGoal Feature article that looked at the nearly 13-feet of goaltending in the Nashville net. In it Kevin Woodley pointed out the similarities between Lindback and Pekka Rinne in net so it was no surprise that when Rinne went down with a knee injury last week, Lindback took over without missing a beat.
This week he went 2-0-1 with a .948 save percentage, including his first NHL shutout in a 3-0 win over Florida to earn second star honours.
Third Star – Jonas Hiller, Anaheim Ducks
Subject of this week’s Ask-a-Pro interview when we took our readers’ questions to the Anaheim goalie, Jonas Hiller also comes away with the week’s third star.
This past week Hiller went 2-1-1 facing 126 shots and stopping 119 of them (.944 SV%). As if that wasn’t busy enough, after a four game week he faced Minnesota tonight, winning 6-2. The relatively easy win must have been a nice break from what was the “week of the shootout.”
On the Ducks’ Western Canadian road swing Hiller faced shootouts in all three Canadian cities – beating Calgary and Edmonton and then coming off the bench in relief of injured Curtis McElhinney and dropping the shootout to Vancouver.
Check back next Sunday when the Three Stars will be selected again in a reader poll.
