Helping Fort McMurray Goalies with Free Camps and Gear

It’s unlikely that you will have missed the devastation in Fort McMurray, Alberta in recent weeks. The city has been evacuated with more than 80,000 people forced to leave. Entire Neighbourhoods destroyed, more than $9 Billion in damages. Canadians have stepped up with record fundraising in support of the Red Cross efforts, generous, but sadly not nearly enough. St. Louis Blues forward Scottie Upshall grew up in Fort McMurray and spoke from the heart in an article published in the Player’s Tribune  yesterday that gives a closer, more personal look at the disaster and its impact.

Dan Meyer of Eli Wilson Goaltending reached out today to let us know that they are offering free camps for all Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo goaltenders, as well as providing assistance replacing equipment lost in the fire (some InGoal test equipment will be making its way there as well). Dan and Eli are passionate about supporting goaltenders and have done so for several years now through the Eli Wilson Goaltending Sponsorship Fund (a registered non-profit foundation) – the very fund the Day with Carey Price raises much-needed support for.

In addition, longtime student and former NHL goaltender Mike Brodeur, who was forced to cancel planned summer camps in Fort McMurray he was to run, will be on hand for one of the camps in Edmonton as a guest instructor.

If you or anyone you know is a goaltender affected by the Fort McMurray fire, please contact Dan Meyer directly to learn more about camp opportunities and gear. You can learn more about the Sponsorship Fund at this web site where you can also make a gift in support of goaltenders, like those from Fort McMurray, who might not otherwise be able to afford equipment or training.

David is one of the founders of InGoal Magazine which he began in 2009. Of course he finds time for some goaltending of his own as well, and despite his age, clings desperately to the idea that some NHL team will call him to play for them - though in his mid-forties (OK, late 40s) it'll likely be for a practice when everyone else on their depth chart has the flu and the shooter tutor has gone in for repairs.
