Vaughn CHL Goalie of Week: Seattle’s Kozun

Vaughn Hockey LogoTaran Kozun of the Seattle Thunderbirds was the Vaughn Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Week for the second time in less than a month after posting back-to-back shutouts.

Kozun, who also won the award in mid-January, was perfect in two starts, stopping all 64 shots in a pair of starts against the Spokane Chiefs to keep Seattle in fourth place in the Western Hockey League’s Western Conference.  He opened with 29 saves and Second Star honours in a 4-0 win over the Chiefs in Spokane, then made 35 saves in Seattle, earning the First Star now in a 4-0 win over the visiting Chiefs.

Kozun, a 19-year-old from Nipawin, Saskatchewan, is in his second full WHL season and was recently acquired by the Thunderbirds from the Kamloops Blazers.  Since joining the Thunderbirds, he has a 9-2-0-0 record with four shutouts, a goals-against-average of 1.51 and save percentage of .952.

Also considered for the award was Dallas Stars prospect Philippe Desrosiers of the Rimouski Oceanic after going 3-0-0-0 with one shutout, a goals-against-average of 0.80 and save percentage of .972.  In the Ontario Hockey League, Devin Williams of the Erie Otters won both of his starts with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .962.
