Goalie Training: Waste of Energy That Is Frustration

Goalie Training: Waste of Energy That Is Frustration

I want to share with you some advice I passed along to one of the goalies in my private Turning Pro coaching program this week because I think it has value for a lot of young goalies (any athlete really) and probably some older goalies too.

This goalie had missed a few deadlines with his training plan for various reasons, simple “life happens” stuff and a little bit of leaving things to the last minute.

I understand that it happens to all of us from time to time, but in this elite program it is also not acceptable.

Each time a deadline was missed the player messaged me with a sincere apology (good first step) and then several sentences about how frustrated he was with himself, etc, etc …

Stop Right There …

Does frustration ever help you solve a problem or improve your performance?

Some of you are saying. “Yes – I got so frustrated with getting injured, that I decided to follow a goalie specific training program rather than doing what my buddies and I usually do and I had my best season ever!”

Okay, fair enough, but realize this; it was NOT the frustration that got you those results, it was the solution you found and the action you took that got you those results.

Do You Have Energy To Waste?

Being frustrated takes energy doesn’t it? We have all been there: Your muscles are tense and your mind is racing with self-defeating thoughts. Does this really make things better?

For some, frustration can be a way to put on a show for others, to show how “I am better than that – I am so mad at myself.” How about you show those same things by doing better next time?

Did you just have a bad game? It happens, there will be others, so shrug it off.

Did you stay up until 2 a.m. the night before a big game? Did you show up to the game without proper nutrition? Did you lose your focus on the puck and let in a weak goal as a result?

Those things are all within your control. So instead of ranting about how frustrated you are, focus on what you have to do to reduce the chances of that happening again, by taking action to be prepared.

Put your energy into getting better …

There are going to be times when you get frustrated. It happens to all of us, so recognize that energy-sucking vampire when it starts lurking and shift your focus to what is within your control and what action you can take to correct it or move forward.

If the event causing your frustration is beyond your control, then you need to just walk away. If it is beyond your control, you can get frustrated all you want, it isn’t going to change anything. Right?

That’s it, have a great frustration-free day!
