Martin Biron channels Gilles Gratton with new Winter Classic Mask

Our good friends at Eyecandyair sent along these shots of Martin Bion’s Winter Classic mask – a tribute to former Ranger Gilles Gratton and his iconic mask by Greg Harrison.
In a time when goaltenders had very simple and bold designs, the lion Gratton wore raised the bar on detail work in mask designs.
Both Rangers with bold personalities, Gratton and Biron also share the “Leo” zodiac sign, which was apparently Gratton’s original inspiration for the design. It’s interesting to note though that Gratton claimed the design was a tiger…
Yesterday we brought you an insider look at Biron’s somewhat quirky use of sock tape (check out the video, it really is incredible to see). We’re glad to hear that he’s grabbing his fair share of attention on HBO’s 24/7 which is filming now, but thankful he hasn’t resorted to Gratton’s old trick of skating onto the ice with nothing but his goal skates on!
You can stay on top of all the great artwork from Eyecandyair by liking them on Facebook:
and by following them on Twitter. And don’t forget the deadline to win the Tim Thomas Moustache Mask painted by Eyecandyair – and worn by Thomas during a historic Bruins run in November – is 11 a.m. EST Friday, December 16.
This is a little creepy, but who cares! That’s really cool. Gratoony the Loony will continue to haunt my goalie dreams forever.
sweet mask
I’m vaguely disappointed that a chicken or a horse wasn’t involved in the design…
Why did he go through the trouble and expense to have that mask made up when we all damn well know that he’s not playing in the game as long as Lundqvist is alive and breathing.
This is so sweet! Can’t wait to see this mask in the show with your retro gear.
