Matt O’Connor brings back the warrior helmet for Ottawa

Back when he skated for Boston University, goaltender Matt O’Connor kept a warrior theme among all of his masks.

This winter, he’s brought that back.

With a new mask from Sylabrush artist Sylvie Marsolais, O’Connor reintroduced his old warrior mask design with a bit of an Ottawa Senators twist. Here’s what Marsolais had to say about it:

“For his paint job,” Marsolais told InGoal, “Matt wanted a warrior helmet like he had in the past with Boston University.

He wanted the helmet to be like a piece of art, with no big logos or number, just art!  The shape of the helmet is similar to the one from the Senators logos.  On the helmet you can see maple leafs, clover leafs, laurel wreath, some warrior angels and some small Sens alternate logos.”

The design was touched off with a personal bit of detailing on the backplate; both of the netminder’s grandparents’ surnames are featured, along with his nickname, ‘OC’.

The mask is a bit of a departure from the usual combination of art and team history, as this combines the Senators logo more seamlessly than most masks see featured. Add in some impressive coloring and it’s a mask that is sure to stand out.

Here are a few more looks at the design:
