Caps Keeper pays tribute to goalie coach Kolzig

With the NHL lockout underway, it may be a while before we see Michal Neuvirth don this sharp new helmet that pays tribute, in part, to his goaltending coach (and legendary Vezina Trophy winning Cap goaltender) Olaf Kolzig. As always, Neuvirth turned to Dave Gunnarsson of for his artwork, and Gunnarsson was kind enough to share it with InGoal readers.

Living in the Capital City of the United States, yet a proud citizen of the Czech Republic, it’s no surprise that, “just as on Michal’s previous masks he wants to celebrate his home country and his new home country,” Gunnarsson wrote. He also included “the Strekov Castle from his hometown and the Hradcany Prague Castle and more.”

In addition the Czech / Washington dual tribute continues in the goaltenders Neuvirth wanted featured. On the left side of the mask we see “the Czech goalie legend [Jiri] Holecek,” while on the right where he also pays tribute to Washington DC,  Gunnarsson included an image of Kolzig. In addition to a Vezina Trophy, Kolzig of course owns just about every Capitals career goaltending record, except Save Percentage and Goals Against Average, where he trails…Neuvirth (

Enjoy the images of the Neuvirth’s new helmet – and here’s hoping we’ll see in action before long.

Of course he finds time for some goaltending of his own as well, and despite his age, clings desperately to the idea that some NHL team will call him to play for them - though in his mid-forties (OK, late 40s) it'll likely be for a practice when everyone else on their depth chart has the flu and the shooter tutor has gone in for repairs.
