Raanta Brings The Moomins To New York!

Raanta MaskAntti Raanta has brought a little piece of home to his new team, as popular children’s TV show The Moomins find their way to the Rockefeller ice rink in his new mask design.

The 26-year old has teamed up with David Gunnarsson of DaveArt to create this unique design featuring Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson’s unique creations.

“Antti wanted something special on his new New York Rangers mask.” Gunnarsson wrote on his Facebook page. “A dear tribute to his home country of Finland. So then a tribute design to the awesome Moomins from Finland is the perfect choice.”

“And when Moomins comes to New York, of course they will play hockey at the world famous Ice Rink at the Rockefeller Center. Moomintroll is the goalie with an old school goalie mask on his head, playing hockey with his buddy Little My”

First published in 1945, The Moomins have been a much loved part of children’s culture in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for many years, but became more popular in other nations, notably Japan, in the 1990s thanks to a new animated series.

Having been a part of so many children, and parents, lives during the 90s, Raanta’s new mask is sure to bring back some happy memories as he prepares for his first season with the Rangers.

The Rauma, Finland hit the headlines recently after revealing his frustration at how things played out for him in Chicago. Raanta was traded to New York during the 2015 NHL Draft weekend.

You can find more of Gunnarsson’s great artwork on his website, Twitter feed, and Instagram account. Meanwhile, check out these awesome close ups of Raanta’s great Moomins mask:
