Tomas Vokoun’s First Pittsburgh Penguins Mask

Pittsburgh Penguin Tomas Vokoun has his first mask for his new team, thanks to artist Dave Gunnarsson of

Tomas Vokoun Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie MaskInGoal discussed Vokoun’s signing, aging and his evolution in goal back in October. If you didn’t get to see the piece, it’s well worth a read today.

Vokoun’s new mask was created as a tribute his new city of Pittsburgh, and like all Daveart creations, it comes with a name – Mask of Steel.

On his new creation Gunnarsson writes, “It is all built on the awesome Penguins logos and the whole design is created as a so called 2 in 1 design. From a distance it is a clear old school design with strong contrasts, and the closer you come the more and more details you will discover and the mask enters a new dimension. And when you come really close you discover the mask is made of steel, with rivets and stuff, as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh and the steel industry.”

David Hutchison

David is one of the founders of InGoal Magazine which he began in 2009. Of course he finds time for some goaltending of his own as well, and despite his age, clings desperately to the idea that some NHL team will call him to play for them - though in his mid-forties (OK, late 40s) it'll likely be for a practice when everyone else on their depth chart has the flu and the shooter tutor has gone in for repairs.

I’m sorry but nothing will make the logo look good. Has to be the worst logo in sports.

You can’t be serious, Marty. The pens logo, in my opinion, is one the best in pro sports. It’s up there with the likes of other NHL classics such as the Hartford Whalers, Minnesota North Stars and Chicago Blackhawks.
