Mrazek Sidelined With Illness, Coreau Recalled

Detroit have recalled Jared Coreau from Grand Rapids, with Petr Mrazek set to miss tonight’s game against Columbus due to illness.

24-year old Coreau, who worked has way up through the ECHL as an undrafted free agent, has gone 29-10-2 record with the AHL Griffins this season, posting a 2.15 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

His strong play this season saw him pitched as a potential future NHL goaltender in InGoal Magazine’s recent Future Watch 2016 rankings.

Mrazek has replaced Jimmy Howard as the Red Wings number one goaltender this year. Despite a recent slump, the Czech puck stopper has gone 26-15-6 this season with a .924 save percentage and 2.21 goals-against average and found himself in the Vezina Trophy conversation earlier in the campaign.

At even strength 5v5, Mrazek’s .934 adjusted save percentage ranks seventh among goaltenders who have plaued a minimum 1,200 minutes this season, with his .860 high danger save percentage the 12th best in the NHL this season.

He is set to become a restricted free agent in July.

In Mrazek’s absence, Howard is expected to start for the Red Wings tonight (Thursday) in what is a pivotal game for the club after a recent scoring slump saw them fall out of the playoff places.

They currently trail 8th placed Philadelphia by 1-point, having played a game more than the Flyers. The Red Wings fell to Philadelphia on Tuesday, with Shayne Gostisbehere’s goal proving to be the winner in a 4-3 game.

Howard has gone 8-10-5 this season, but has won just one of his last 14 appearances, posting a disappointing .907 save percentage and 2.82 goals-against average.
