AHL Goalie News — Thursday, Oct. 15

  • Well, just as sure as I posted about him making a case for staying in Hershey, the Bears sent rookie stud Braden Holtby to South Carolina Wednesday, where he’ll start for the Stingrays of the ECHL and get plenty of playing time. (American Hockey League News)
  • Manitoba’s Cory Schneider fell on the sword for allowing two soft goals in the 4-2 loss to Abbotsford Tuesday night. (Winnipeg Sun)
  • Big Ben Bishop, who grew up in St. Louis, has a childhood hero, Ed Belfour, as his goaltending coach with the Peoria Rivermen. (Peoria Journal Star)

Here’s some highlights from Peoria vs. Milwaukee a few days ago, with Bishop in goal for Peoria and Mark Dekanich in for Milwaukee. Big Ben is so big (How big is he?) the net looks like one of those little ones you buy for your 5 year old to play with in the driveway.

Heather Galindo

I cover the AHL Houston Aeros for, which has focused my passion for goaltending on minor league goalies mainly in the AHL. To stay abreast of every last drop of AHL goalie news, follow me at @InGoalMagAHL on Twitter while the big news, analysis, etc. will be posted here at I was so inspired by watching the goalies here in Houston a few years ago that I went out and learned to skate and play hockey in order to become a goalie myself. So far I'm still more sieve than goalie, but I've never had more fun being so terrible at something!

Too bad about Schneider letting in a couple of softies…I’m rooting for him to do well. Hockey East represents!

  2. James

I wonder how Belfour ended up as an AHL goalie coach…….

My thought was that it’s probably more of a consulting gig, whereas being an NHL goalie coach is a full time thing. I think the team just wants to make sure their “goalie of the future” isn’t wasting away without some help. I’ve seen the difference it makes when minor goalies get a little attention thrown their way by a goalie coach. Doesn’t happen nearly enough.

Who’s to say that the pundits who want bigger nets in the NHL to increase scoring get their way and guys like Bishop become the norm? How crazy would that be to watch?

I think I’d be an even bigger sieve at 5’7″….
