Eli Wilson Elite Prospects-12

Eli Wilson’s students won’t be spending Christmas break on the sofa. They will be on the ice playing world-class hockey in a beautiful winter resort town.
For long-time Eli student Eric Comrie, there’s a good chance that the beautiful winter resort town will be Malmo, Sweden. That’s where Comrie will be if he is successful in winning one of the two coveted goaltending spots on Team Canada’s roster for the World Junior Hockey Championships.

While playing at the World Junior Championships is a rare opportunity, the chance to play hockey at the highest level in a beautiful winter resort town is something Eli Wilson students do every year. Once again this Christmas break, Eli will take a group of goaltenders to spectacular Jasper, Alberta, for a three day conditioning camp that will set you up to be at your very best for the rest of the season and beyond.

Using Eli’s building-block approach to teaching the position, it is amazing what can be accomplished in a short period of time. In just three days on intense focus and hard work, your game can change dramatically. You can experience quantum growth as a goaltender. Eli teaches goaltending to all levels of goaltenders the same way, establishing a solid foundation of basics and then strategically layering in new skills and movements so that they become natural almost overnight. Most goalies don’t even realize just how far their game has advanced in just a few days of training with Eli Wilson.

The concept of a training retreat is one used at every level of elite hockey. NHL teams routinely take their players away from the distractions of daily life for a few days at a time in order to regain focus and commitment. Canadian Rocky Mountain resorts like Jasper, Banff, Kelowna, and Penticton are routinely used as destinations for teams to conduct training and evaluation camps.

This year Eli’s students will spend three days, from December 28 to 30, on the ice at the Jasper Arena, training at the highest level. Off the ice, there will be classroom and dryland training sessions. There will also be team building, relaxation, and many new friendships made. No doubt some time will be spent gathered around the TV cheering on the World Junior Hockey Championships in Sweden. If Eli’s student Eric Comrie of the WHL’s Tri-City Americans makes the team, there is no question that the cheering will be a little louder.

The Christmas camp is also a retreat for Eli Wilson himself, who has been busier than ever this winter. After spending the summer conducting camps and working with his roster of NHL goalies like Carey Price, Corey Schneider Ray Emery, and James Reimer, in October Eli was named goaltending coach of the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.

Students have a variety of options for the Jasper Christmas camp. They can purchase packages that include room and board, bus transportation from Edmonton, or just the hockey portion. Often families have planned winter getaways around the camp, relaxing at the Jasper resorts or skiing at spectacular Marmot Basin while their goaltender receives world-class training. For others, the room and board package represents the chance to truly escape from the distractions of daily life and meet and bond with new friends. Even if you are unable to attend this year’s Christmas camp in Jasper, make sure you take advantage of the down time over the holidays to refocus your mind and body for the remainder of the season. The most important games of the year are ahead of you, and you need to be at your very best when you play hockey’s most demanding and difficult position.
