“Crazy Bobby G” Returns on Chris Gibson’s Newest Mask
“Crazy Bobby G” has returned to the new 2017-18 mask for New York Islanders prospect Chris Gibson. First appearing on Gibson’s mask last season, the Bobby G character was designed by Poitras and adopted by Gibson. He is “back and there to stay,” Poitras told InGoal magazine in an email.
This year, though, he’s showing his skull on the opposite side of the mask, posed amid New York Islander logos and the young Finn’s personal motto, “Dream a dream, make it a great dream, and dream it greatly.” Gibson’s number, 33 adorns the chin. The backplate features another of Gibson’s mottos, “Luctor et emergo” –meaning “struggle and emerge” — and some mementos relating to his family placed on a flag of Finland.
Poitras and Airbrush Zap have been doing Gibson’s masks since he played with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was drafted in 2011 by the Los Angeles Kings and has since played in the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders systems. This season will be his third with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
