Goalies Against Cancer
It seems that everyone is finally getting around to supporting a great cause these days and raising money for cancer research, the NHL, NFL and everywhere in between. Pink has become a part of sports uniforms all over world the past few months.
Being a hockey fanatic, I see all kinds of web pages, and bulletin boards I happened to stumble across something that is a lot closer to home and more specific…Goalies Against Cancer.
(I also later found out that Joey, one of the brothers that is putting this all together, also works for the same company I do…lets just say it’s a large coffee purveyor, so I had no idea how close this really was to home. I was in a meeting one day, and a fellow manager of mine had a Goalies Against Cancer flier!)
Over the next few minutes please take the time to read this article, and help out in any way you can. I promise if you make it to the end, I have a special treat for all you inGoal readers that you DO NOT WANT TO MISS!!! (Hey where are you going? Its not fair to skip to the end and just find the treat you know!!!)
A few years back I did a benefit for a fellow goalie that had brain cancer, and when I came across this I knew I wanted to help spread the word. If you have never done a fundraiser or a benefit of any type, let me be the first to tell you, its like another job. Constant emails, phone calls, not to mention the hours put in to keeping up a website. Let me be the first to thank the Maestas (Joey and Brandon) brothers for taking the time to do this! It’s a thankless and tough task and you guys are doing great!
What is Goalies Against Cancer?
Besides the obvious, Goalies Against Cancer is a creative way to raise money to support finding a cure for cancer. Joey and Brandon are raising funds by taking pledges based on the amount of puck marks that make it on their sticks. After each game, they are counting the amount of puck marks, and then cleaning and re-taping the sticks so that it’s its easier to see the new marks. Once they are all done, all of the marks are tallied, and those who pledged a per puck mark pledge will be notified what their total donation will be. For those of you who don’t want to pledge that way, normal set amounts are being accepted as well. They also are having a raffle that you can enter to win sweet gear from various manufacturers. (see later in the article for directions on how to enter the raffle)
