Rämö Returns to Calgary on One-Year Deal

Karri Rämö is coming back to Calgary after re-signing with the Flames for one-year, $3.8 million. The contract was signed shortly before he became an unrestricted free agent.
It’s an interesting move for the Flames as they now have three goaltenders with one-way contracts. Something must now happen between Jonas Hiller, Joni Ortio, and Rämö – unless the Flames plan on carrying three goaltenders for the entire season.

This save by Ramo was ranked as the third best save of the 2014-2015 regular season on our recent countdown.
The signing isn’t completely out of the blue, as Rämö expressed his desire to stay in the city of Calgary. What is surprising is how short of a term the contract is. The goaltending market is likely very weak, and he may see a return to Calgary as his best chance to be a starting goaltender.
Ortio may be very concerned about this signing, as previously mentioned, he is on a one-way deal and was planning on making a run for the starter’s role. It is a risky move if they send him down to the AHL because he would have to clear waivers, so the situation will be one to keep an eye on.
