Alexisonfire Tribute Atop Scrivens New Oilers Mask
From a distance, Ben Scrivens new Edmonton Oilers mask appears to be a simple but very stylish take on his new team’s long-time logo. But a closer look reveals there is more to it.
Designed by Scrivens and hand painted by long-time personal painter Steve Nash of EyeCandyAir, the new mask includes a nod to former band Alexisonfire by placing their Heart Skull logo inside the oil drop atop the forehead of the mask.
It’s not clear whether the tribute comes from Scrivens being a big fan of the Juno Award-winning band, or a friendship with band member Wade MacNeil, but judging by a post on his Instagram account, the latter was clearly thrilled to be part of it.
“This is hands down one of the coolest things that’s happened in my music career,” MacNeil wrote alongside a picture of the new mask.
Whatever the origin of the idea, Scrivens guided the mask design himself, according to the staff at EyeCandyAir: “The entire concept was his. Old school. Bold. See it from far away.”
You can check out more work from Nash, who creates all his masks by hand using only traditional methods and tools like a pencil, paintbrush and airbrush, on the official EyeCandyAir website, or follow them on Twitter, Facebook, and on Vine, or check out a 360-degree Instagram video.
