Vaughn CHL Goalie of the Week: Chicoutimi’s Christopher Gibson

Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League was chosen as the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending January 6 after winning both his games with one shutout, a 1.50 goals-against average and a .964 save percentage.
Not to be confused with the other Gibson currently in the junior hockey spotlight – Vaughn goaltender John Gibson of the Ontario Hockey League recently backstopped Team USA to gold at the World Junior Championships – Christopher Gibson had been building towards the weekly CHL award, earning consecutive nominations before taking top spot over the past week.
The 20-year-old Finnish goalie backstopped the Sags to a pair of road wins, starting with a 40-save performance in a 4-3 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Friday and continuing with 41 saves and First Star honours in a 1-0 win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. It was his third shutout of the season and 12th of his four-year QMJHL career, putting him just three behind the all-time league record holder Ryan Mior, who recorded 15 shutouts with PEI and Gatineau between 2003 and 2008.
Gibson was a second round selection of the Los Angeles Kings at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, and in 21 games this season had a 11-7-0-1 record, a 2.68 goals-against-average, and a .916 save percentage.
Also considered for the award this week was Laurent Brossoit of the Edmonton Oil Kings after going 2-0-0-0 with a shutout and a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage, and Plymouth Whalers rookie Alex Nedeljkovic, who was 4-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.23 and save percentage of .934.
