Advanced Hand-Eye Coordination Drill (Kneeling On Ball)

I have told you many times not to stand on a stability ball. Even though you might see some goalies doing it and saying how it trains their “core stability” and balance, in my opinion that is hogwash.

I explained it all quite some time ago here, so please do not think that standing on a ball doing this exercise is the super-ninja-advanced version. It is not.

Okay, now that we have that out of the way, here is the exercise I am talking about:

It is pretty straight forward, but here are the key points:

  • Make sure you are using a good quality burst resistant stability ball. If your gym has had the same stability balls for the last four years, do not trust them.
  • Make sure you are fully comfortable just kneeling on the ball before you add in the catch and pass.
  • If you are just learning to kneel on the ball, do it where you can put your hands on a table or a power rack to help you balance until you feel comfortable.
  • Whenever you are kneeling on the ball make sure you have enough room around you to roll off safely in any direction.

So pretty much “safety first.”

If the ball is coming off the wall a little too quickly for you then use a tennis ball rather than a lacrosse ball.

If passing and catching is too easy for you, start throwing the ball harder and a little farther from you centre of mass, so you have to reach a little, that will change things up.

Make sure you are following the ball with your eyes all the way to your hand.

That is a fun one – enjoy!
