How To Engage Core, Stop Twisting Out of Way When Moving Laterally
I am guessing most of you do it since almost every time I go out on the ice to watch one of the goalies I train work with his or her goalie coach I see them do it.
I also see almost all of the minor hockey goalies I watch do it during games and even most of the OHL goalies I watch do it … so I am guessing you do it too.
I don’t blame you, you probably don’t even know you do it. You have a lot going on when you are moving from side to side in your crease, so I can see how it happens, but it also decreases the amount of net you are covering and puts you off balance for your next move.
Do you ever let your body side bend or twist when you are pushing from post-to-post?
When you are pushing from your left post to your right, do you ever notice your torso either turn or side bend back toward the left?
If you work with a goalie coach, I know he or she is on you about it.
It is something you should pay attention to when you are on the ice, and today I have an off-ice drill that not only increases your lateral speed and power, but helps you banish this nasty habit that gives shooters a little more net and a little more time.
Here’s how to do it:
Like I said in the video from the Ultimate Goalie Live workshop, I don’t care if you use a ball or how heavy the ball is. I care that you are getting a good powerful push and keeping your torso stable.
Start with three sets of six to eight repetitions off each leg.
Stick your balance for three seconds (it is key that you find your perfect point of balance).
