Goalie Training Tip: Two Legs Faster Than One

Goalie Training Tip: Two Legs Faster Than One

I am coming at today’s training tip from a lateral shuffle in the crease perspective. I am thinking from a standing ready position, although it will likely help your lateral shuffle from knees as well.

The first exercise I have for you is a no brainer it is a quick Push-Push-Stick from your trail leg. So if you are moving to your left, you are pushing off your right leg.

This is what most of you probably do BUT …

What if you made the most of both legs?

You have two; why not use them?

Here’s the idea: While your trail leg is recovering, your lead leg is “pulling,” helping you conserve a portion of your momentum and boosting your speed and efficiency slightly.

You are not going to get equal power from both, but a slight increase and efficiency in speed would probably be a welcome benefit – am I right?

Trail Leg Push-Push-Stick

Remember that these are meant to be quick pushes and you should be trying to stick the landing at the end. Stay low in your legs; do not hop laterally from a tall standing position.

Start with two to three sets of four each way.

Lead Leg Pull-Pull-Stick

This one is tough – you can see in the video how tough it is to land on that “inside edge” and stabilize at the end. This is a nice dynamic stabilization drill for the adductors (groins), working them in a way you don’t often get in the gym, but need on the ice.

Get those quick “pulls” and then stick the landing – start easy, it is harder than it looks.

Start with two to three sets of four each way.

Happy training!
