In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we’re joined by the man we call the Godfather of Swedish Goaltending, Thomas Magnusson, @magnussonth, who is the Head of Goaltending for the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. While goaltending coaching is ubiquitous in top teams now, he was the first in the Swedish Pro leagues, even pre-dating Francois Allaire in the NHL. Magnusson led the charge as Sweden remade their program with the key strategy of coaching the coaches and continues down this path with 250 certified coaches now and a regular program of professional development to support them. We also spoke at length about recent research in Sweden into hip and groin injuries in goaltending and some potential practice and equipment changes to help mitigate this growing problem in goaltenders.

For our gear segment, we bring you another first, as the man known as The Goalie Gear Nerd on social media @GoalieGearNerd – Mr. Nerd to us – stopped in for a chat about trends in goalie gear this year and next. He’s got one of the widest networks in the game and we couldn’t think of anyone who would be better to close out 2019 with to talk gear.
