The records, answered
Has a goalie ever scored a goal?
Yes — it has happened 20 times in the NHL alone, by 17 different goaltenders, starting with Billy Smith in 1979. Goalies have also scored verified goals in the AHL, ECHL, junior hockey, and European leagues, and every one is listed on this page.
How many goals have NHL goaltenders scored?
20 goals by 17 different goaltenders — 18 in the regular season and 2 in the playoffs. Twelve were shot into the empty net; eight were credited when the goalie was the last player on his team to touch the puck before an opponent scored on their own net.
Who scored the first goalie goal in NHL history?
Billy Smith of the New York Islanders, on November 28, 1979, against the Colorado Rockies. He was credited as the last Islander to touch the puck before a Colorado player put it into his own empty net — Smith did not shoot it.
Who was the first goalie to actually shoot and score?
Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers, on December 8, 1987, shooting the puck the length of the ice into the Boston Bruins' empty net.
Who scored the first goalie goal in professional hockey?
Michel Plasse, on February 21, 1971, for the Kansas City Blues of the Central Hockey League — he fired the puck the length of the ice into the empty net with 44 seconds left. Plasse was also the first goaltender ever taken first overall in an NHL draft, by the Montreal Canadiens in 1968.
Has a goalie ever scored in the playoffs?
Yes, twice. Ron Hextall scored in the 1989 playoffs against Washington, and Martin Brodeur scored in the 1997 playoffs against Montreal.
Has a goalie ever scored short-handed?
Yes — Ron Hextall's 1989 playoff goal against Washington was scored short-handed, the only short-handed goalie goal in NHL history.
Which goalie has scored the most goals in the NHL?
Martin Brodeur, with three (1997, 2000, and 2013).
Which city has hosted the most goalie goals?
No single city — three buildings are tied, each having hosted two of the NHL's 20. The Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey hosted both of Martin Brodeur's home goals (1997 and 2000). Vancouver's arena (General Motors Place, now Rogers Arena) hosted two scored by visiting goalies into the Canucks' empty net — Evgeni Nabokov in 2002 and Linus Ullmark in 2023. And Raleigh's rink (RBC Center, now PNC Arena) hosted Cam Ward in 2011 and Martin Brodeur in 2013. Every other NHL goalie goal was scored in a different building. Worth noting: roughly half of all goalie goals were scored by the visiting goaltender, so the host city is often the opponent's home, not the scorer's.
Which goalie has scored the most goals at any level?
Across every level we track, Alex Nedeljkovic and Kaapo Kähkönen lead with four apiece. Nedeljkovic scored in the NHL, the AHL (twice), and the ECHL; Kähkönen scored in junior hockey, for Finland’s U20 national team, in Mestis, and in Liiga preseason.
Has a goalie ever scored a game-winning goal?
Yes — Martin Brodeur is the only goaltender in NHL history credited with a game-winning goal.
Has a goalie ever scored on another goalie?
Only once. Martin Brodeur's 2013 goal against Carolina is the only time a goaltender has been credited with scoring against another goaltender.
What's the difference between a "shot" goalie goal and an "own-goal" credit?
A shot goal is the goalie firing the puck down the ice into the opponent's empty net. An own-goal credit is awarded when the goalie is the last player on his team to touch the puck before an opponent accidentally puts it into their own net — the goalie gets the goal on the scoresheet without shooting it.
Has any goaltender scored in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL?
Yes — Alex Nedeljkovic is the only goaltender to score a goal in all three leagues.
Has a goalie scored in both college and the pros?
Yes — a few have. Jonathan Quick scored in the NCAA (UMass) and the ECHL in the same year, 2007. Damian Rhodes scored in the NCAA (Michigan Tech) and later in the NHL.

Never miss a goalie goal
We track every one — NHL on down. Get InGoal’s free weekly newsletter and we’ll bring the goaltending world to your inbox: the saves, the gear, and yes, the goals.
The goalie goal is older than the NHL itself — but the early game barely resembled today’s. In the 1900s goaltenders played far more like skaters: free to leave the crease, carry the puck, and rush it up the ice (the rules pinning a goalie to his net — and even letting him drop to make a save — came later). In that world Montreal’s Fred Brophy twice went the length of the ice and scored, and, almost unheard of since, beat goaltenders standing in their nets rather than shooting into empty ones. Records from the era are thin on exactly how, but these are the earliest goals by a goaltender on record.
Can a goalie cross centre ice? The red-line rule
That freedom is long gone. In the 1962-63 NHL season — after goaltenders like Glenn Hall and Don Head started venturing up the ice — the league barred netminders from crossing centre, and the rule still stands today. Under NHL Rule 27.7, a goalie who plays the puck or checks an opponent beyond the centre red line is given a minor penalty. The most famous test came in November 1997, when Patrick Roy stickhandled past centre (deking Wayne Gretzky along the way) and was promptly whistled for it — watch it below.

Sources & thanks
A special thank-you to The Goaltender Home Page (@GoalieHistory) for their years of work chronicling the goaltenders who have scored. Their research helped us build and cross-check this list, and pointed us toward goals we would never have found on our own.
We also drew on QuantHockey, Wikipedia, the ECHL and NHL official records, and the individual team, league, and news reports linked on each goal above. Every entry here was checked against a source we could stand behind before we published it. Spot an error, or know of a goal we have missed? Send it our way.
