‘Nothing through you’: Lessons from the development of Joonas Korpisalo
When Joonas Korpisalo signed a two-year, $5.6-million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, it was another big step in his path from highly regarded Finnish prospect with No. 1 upside to established starting NHL goalie.
It’s a path that Korpisalo talked on Monday about continuing alongside Elvis Merzlikins, who is also set to become a restricted free agent this summer, barring an extension of his own. But while others focus on what’s next and how that friendly competition for playing time might play out in the Columbus crease in the coming years, there’s a good lesson for other young goalies (and maybe even goaltending coaches) in Korpisalo’s development up to this point. It’s a lesson that centers around a phrase most in the goaltending community are probably familiar with.
