Paul Schonfelder, Carolina Hurricanes goalie coach, presents a mental filter diagram during a video session

Pro-Tips: How to Clean your Mental Filter

Carolina Hurricanes Goalie Development Coach Paul Schonfelder has a simple but effective exercise to help his goaltenders control their thought process and focus on the right thing.

Schonfelder calls it cleaning your mental filter, it starts with a simple exercise that he shared in response to a question from an InGoal Premium Member about eliminating outside pressure during a live webinar with Andy Chiodo, the goalie development coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, on May 9. The advice Schonfelder and Chiodo shared resonated so deeply we wanted to follow it up with separate articles, and since very few of us can get on the ice yet, it made sense to start with some mindset advice.

The best part: All you need to do it is a piece of paper and something to write with.

Still ahead in this article:

The exercise starts with two words written inside a circle — and what Schonfelder says a pro goalie scrawls outside that circle is in the next paragraph.
