However, as the lesser teams were locked in life-or-death combat, the league’s best were engaged in their own, far more civilized round robin tournament to determine their seeding. As expected, most teams gave ice time to two goaltenders; Washington and Tampa Bay were the lone exceptions, with the Capitals having a key injury to expected backup Ilya Samsonov, and the Lightning having the clearest starter-backup role division of any round robin team.
